Meta just held their annual Connect Developers Conference, but unlike last year this connect actually included new hardware. We can now say, although we have had months and months of leaks (and even an in-depth look at a pre-release unit) that Meta has been building a significant upgrade to the Quest family. The Meta Quest Pro, in line with the leaks, boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 5G, Dual 2160 x 2160 OLED panels, and a brand new inside-out tracking system that includes both eye and face tracking.

The biggest change comes from the new next-gen controllers that, instead of being tracked by the headset, contain their own camera array that allows them to orient themselves in space solving the problem of controller occlusion as they don't need line of sight with the headset or lighthouses.

Seeing as the industry is only just now starting to catch up to Quest with their own standalone hardware only time will tell if this device will be what Meta needs to keep their lead but with a closed ecosystem and a clear trend of "cancel hardware and lock it out of future use by removing functionality" who knows if people will continue to want to keep clinging to the remains of Oculus or if there are greener pastures with others. At $1499 though, it's a bit of a leap.

Meta also announced changes to its Horizon Platform. Realizing how low-fi the app has been Meta announced today a few significant upgrades like the ability to import Tri-mesh objects, access Unreal Prefabs, and even use typescript to add powerful scripting to your created worlds. The biggest change comes from the ability to access the platform from the web, supposedly on any device. I wonder if this will be enough to break Horizon from its slump as a dead platform or if it will continue to be a ghost town.... just a prettier ghost town.

Well, that happened. Nintendo just had a Nintendo Direct Press Conference to showcase the upcoming Super Mario Movie and um... wow. Mario has been changed for the first time since... well... ever... While still looking like "Mario" he sounds NOTHING like the Mario we know. There is no accent, no falsetto, he sounds like Chris Pratt. Illumination, the Comcast-owned studio behind the yellow creatures along with the Sing and Secret Life of Pets franchises, are the ones animating this feature and they have done an amazing job of kicking my preconception of their studio to the curb. Visually amazing, but god... Pratt..... WHY?

Seeing as this is just a teaser only time will tell if this first impression is going to truly tell us anything about the actual feature but the fact that Nintendo has held this back and has pushed the film's release date back multiple times has me personally questioning if this is going to be a vocal "Ugly Sonic" situation here... Thing is, while Sega is willing to bend, Nintendo has a history of making questionable changes and choices with their properties and when met with criticism doubling down.

Speculation will be interesting though seeing as Nintendo immediately started issuing takedowns of reaction streams...

Almost 3 years ago I wanted to become a streamer. I had participated a bunch in content made by my faves like Great Night Live and wanted to make people feel good like they did for me. I did a lot of shots in the dark, things like random game streaming, virtual world history podcasts, and even a Harry Potter AR Game Vlog, but nothing felt like I was doing anything worthwhile. Then I got the Idea to try V-Tubing, becoming a character with a convoluted hidden ARG backstory. While that did not go far the show I created has gone on to become The Scynewave Show, something that I am rather proud to have been able to produce, but still, sometimes I feel that I'm just a quiet voice in a sea of content. Why push on? Why create?

Well, I've always had a cheerleader in Rollthered, an incredibly talented multimedia artist responsible for so many things in VRChat that it's almost quicker to list what he hasn't done for the VR community than everything he has, almost always for free and many times without credit. Shit, his work formed the core of the camera system that powers my show. However, even though every one of us interacts with things that he may have directly or indirectly touched every time we don a VR headset and enter a VR club, few people have had a conversation with him, and he's just explained why.

Red just releaced a very personal video titled "Social Anxiety In A Virtual World" in which he goes to public lobbies in VRC and dances with random people. While this may not seem like much, he has lived his entire life to this point fearing these very kinds of interactions. By dancing, he very publicly attempts to overcome his intense fear of social interactions and impostor syndrome, subjecting himself to the intimately vulnerable situation as a sort of "Social Vaccine." The result is a video unlike any He has ever produced. I pulled him aside to ask him a few questions about the work.

SO I just watched your video, I know there was a lot of spam text at the beginning, but what would you say was your strongest reason for getting out there and trying this?

I wanted to highlight the struggle social anxiety can bring, and ways to overcome it for anyone who feel's stuck. I actually had a few friends encouraging me to do this who have been emotional support for me. I wouldn't have done it without them.

For me personally social anxiety is something that I have always been able to run away from. When I finally decided to start facing it and getting out of my comfort zone after taking friends advice, I started to realize how much better I felt. And I wanted to capture that on video for all to see.

It feels like this was a very hard emotional struggle for you to start, I think we all feel moments of inadequacy and doubt over the worth of our expression. This clearly speaks to that. If you could put this struggle into words what do you think that they would say?

All the reasons I should have been myself but didn't because I was holding myself back. The music I chose also reflects some of my thoughts about social anxiety and how pressure defines us. I picked part in the song that mentions "what I wanted to become, is lost in all the moments that I just cant get back." because that solidified a lot of the reasons to keep trying for me.

Speaking as someone that would like to think themselves a close personal friend of yours I have seen over the years your struggles with the duality of your existence. there's RollTheRed, creator of countless tools, prefabs, shaders, a vast discography of music, and even bearing the title of default avatar creator, lending your own personal likeness to forever be ingrained into the initial VRchat experience … But then there is also Red, someone that despite DJing some of the biggest parties in VR, is very reclusive, private, and may or may not have an army of alt accounts that look, act, and sound nothing like anyone could ever expect from you. What was your big reason to exist online in this way in the past and what has inspired you to change?

Over time I realized that Rollthered as a brand name and me as a person were two of the same thing. A lot of the work I do is to make a positive impact on the world, and my social anxiety felt like I was running away from being myself while doing that. It made me realize that it is ok to be fully myself as a creator. and especially with the people who support my work, they expect nothing more and nothing less than to continue to see me thrive and be happy. So I owe it to myself to take good care of myself first and foremost before I can take care of others.

Being mostly a social hermit, and not being my true self out of fear was something I couldn't keep doing, I have had so many amazing interactions with people on Twitter who cheered me on throughout the lifespan of Rollthered as a project. And now I see that Rollthered can be more than an amalgamation of creative things I post, it is part of my identity. It is me.

In the text you wrote at the beginning of the video you gave some very personal reasons for challenging yourself to do this. I know this is hard but one of the reasons you gave was your late grandmother. Having personally experienced the loss of close family and currently going through the decline in my surviving grandmother's health I know how hard it is to come to terms with the concept of their loss. I can imagine what it must have felt for you, unable to reach out to her in the end. If it's ok, if you could have said something to her, do you mind sharing that with us here?

I would have told her this. : "Hey grandma, I know our time here is limited. And that you have always told me to keep pursuing things that make me happy. I just wanted you to know that I appreciated all the times you encouraged me to keep playing piano, and watching the sci fi channel late at night while we ate ice cream and joked about how bad the production quality of some of the movies were. You were my first real friend, you showed me what it means to be a good person in this world. And while you may be on your way to rest, I want you to know what positive impact you had on me and everyone else in the world. I love you."

Honestly I never even thought to say these words out loud, even after her passing. Saying that while typing got me tearing up a lot. It was very therapeutic, thank you for allowing me to say my peace here.

There have been countless times when I felt that The Scynewave Show wasn't working, or that nobody cared about what I had to say, but then like clockwork there you were. Life is scary, anxiety is normal. But the most feared thing in the world is fear itself. It defines us, and makes us not the person we strive to be. It can be very difficult sometimes, but you can always do something about it, whether it be helping a friend struggling with social anxiety, or seeking help yourself if you are struggling. Inaction leads to feeling bad and sitting with those feelings of anxiety.

In the video I showed myself going into public and letting go of all the inhibition that I was feeling. I knew there might be some negative interactions, but I stayed headstrong and in the end I was pleasantly surprised to have had such a positive experience despite my anxiety telling me the opposite was going to happen.

It’s like everything they do just bleeds aesthetic. I think though my favorite part has to be Teddyloid’s iconic soundtrack. At the time I was a dive bar DJ spinning b-side electo house and the more poppy industrial stuff out there. All of a sudden this vulgar anime hits my radar and forever changed my taste in music. Do you feel PSG influenced your musical palette?

I think a lot of popular genres at the moment, with hyperpop adjacent genres and rave inspired music making a return, leave me wanting a very specific something that very few have been good at hitting (zaphyre has hit it very well). I think experiencing P&S has put together the aesthetic pieces that I've wanted to combine for a while now, I definitely plan to continue the sound of this song for a bit at the lease.

Teddyloid is absolutely one of my inspirations, especially being a queer kid only having music and anime. As of recent though, Jersey Club, hyperpop, and just hard dance in general has absolutely made it’s way into my heart, who honestly, a person I see who’s phenomenal and itches that scratch for me is DJ Re:code.

HBO FINALLY dropped our first REAL look at their tv adaptation of The Last of Us, one of the most emotionally charged games to come out of the last decade. The show's production was led by Neil Druckmann, the Co-President of the game's studio Naughty Dog, and it shows. Each shot in the trailer looks like a Playstation remaster from the future. It's amazing how video-game stories are now being legitimized in film and TV as of late. I look forward to being able to point people to the original but still only time will tell if my knowledge of the game's story will turn me into a prophetic sage or just a fan who understands the setting as we don't know how closely the show will stick to the plot. At least one thing is the same... Clickers are fucking terrifying.

Today YouTube announced a number of new ways that creators can now monetize their work, the key one being the ability to use professionally licensed music from a growing list of major recording artists and just opting to share your ad revenue instead of just forfeiting it to them. In addition, they are opening up more ways to join the partner program and are also setting up programs that will give creators the ability to make money off of the company's growing TikTok alternative, YouTube Shorts. Only time will tell how this will affect the streamer economy, but at least you can get paid when you post a thirst-trap dance on the platform.

Clive Barker has finally returned to his beginnings and has produced a remake of his famed 1987 film Hellraiser. Seeing as Barker was the author of The Hellbound Heart, the story that the movie was based on, and was the Writer/Director of the original film I had no doubt that one of the legends of horror wouldn't disappoint. Well, more evidence has been thrown into the ring as the trailer has just dropped, giving us our first glimpse into Jamie Clayton's Pinhead, which is actually more true to the book than the original movie. While some may think that the genderswap is just a trendy decision, the source material described the sadistic creature as having the"...light and breathy" voice of "an excited girl."

Hellraiser drops on Hulu on October 7th

Fortnite just kicked off it's new season and as always Epic Games are adding more story and new mechanics. Since the overwhelming success of "No-Builds" mode, the game has been seeing a resurgence of players happy to no longer be forced to tackle the difficult act of reflexively building structures to protect themselves. Epic is apparently also trying to combat Nintendo for players as well by introducing "Chrome" a new substance that when you cover yourself with it gives you temporary enhanced speed, immunity to fall and fire damage, and the ability to melt into a blob to dash through the air and even phase through walls. Seeing as Splatoon 3, another game in this genre of "less than lethal" shooters, just dropped combined with Epic's recent push towards making the game even more inclusive with the introduction of their first non-binary character skin, it's clear that their vision for the future is more Friendly than Ferocious.

Youtube's most mischievous engineer is at it again. He has built a fleet of backpack-disguised robots, custom-tailored to defeat a multitude of different arcade games. Seriously, check it out. It’s nuts. Through the process, his usual entertainingly educational banter explains how he built each robot and teaches you how you can achieve similar effects as a mere human. It’s over engineered as hell, but what do you expect from the guy who has spent the past 4 years trying to come up with the perfect way to shower porch pirates with fart spray and glitter?

You know that thing that celebrities do where they start to become recognizable and they then try to capitalize on that fame in any way they can? Ads, food, makeup, and anything else they can put their brand on is fair game. Something that is one of the riskier bets that many celebs take on is making the leap from the screen to your ears as a musical performer. Happens all the time. At best you end up with someone in the ranks of Eddy Murphy and Ryan Gosling, although they may not be the most unique acts they are able to hold their own and bring a distinct stage presence to their performances. Sadly though, most of the time you end up with work by someone far too confident to understand that music isn't really for them.

Well, this isn't that.

Joe Keery, best known as playing the asshole-bully-turned-hero Steve Harrington in Netflix's blockbuster sensation Stranger Things, has just released a new album as his alter-ego, Djo. Titled DECIDE, this is the second full studio album Keery has released under the moniker and dear god it's good.

For years since college Joe had been performing as a founding member of the psychedelic rock band Post Animal. After being cast in his now most famous role, he stopped touring with them in an attempt to keep his musical and acting careers separate but after the overwhelming success of the Netflix horror series and confirmation that his character would become a series regular he parted ways with them. “That whole situation is kind of difficult, as you want to separate the band from the TV show, as that is just bad for the band,” Keery explained in a 2019 interview with NME, “And it can help initially with exposure, but those guys don’t have any connection to the show and they don’t want to be labeled as, like, Stranger Things band, and I think we sort of realized that right out the gate, so, I think separating the band from that, is good in the long run…"

Enter Djo, his solo project. Understanding that there is no way he could ever be divorced from his Stranger Things fame, Keery let his facial hair grow out, donned a shaggy wig and shades, and created a persona unlike anyone would suspect. He's funky, high-concept, but at the same time incredibly blunt and to the point with his music. With a diverse collection of influences like CharliXCX, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Parcels, Todd Terje, Justice, and Twin Peaks, Keery has crafted a sound that is familiar and unexpected, catchy and experimental all at once. DECIDE, this new album, shows that his idea of what he wants to create has further solidified and shows that he has a very clear vision.

The opening track, Runner (Linked at the top of the post), made me weep the first time I heard it. I've never felt that I've identified with a song so completely. Keery then just goes track to track, his lyrics clear and unambiguous, telling stories of personal growth, narcissism, addiction to social media, falling in love, falling out of love, and clinging desperately to something you fear you have forever lost, all with an overarching theme of self-realization.

Being candid for a moment, I've struggled with my own issues of competency, honesty, and owning up to my own personal responsibilities. This album comes at a time when the stars aligned and I was in the right position for Keery's Lyrics to hit me like a ton of empathy-filled bricks directly in all of my feels. Each track is written as if it is happening right at the moment of realization that a change needs to happen in your life and now you have to choose, to DECIDE, to be better. It's all the emotions I've felt as of late distilled into 13 songs and 36 minutes and a reminder, no... an ultimatum that change is more than just words and that for it to last you have to do more than just want it. Do yourself a favor: press play and don't look back.

Look I get it, some of you don't really care to use crypto while others want to find a way to get everything they own on the blockchain. No matter how you feel there is one central fact about crypto, it can be an environmental nightmare.

Built on a system called "Proof of Work," the idea that money can be backed by the cryptographic math that powers it's security. The Proof of Work system has users solve a never-ending set of math problems on the network based on "blocks" of information, transactions, and other data. Increasing in complexity over time, these problems ensure that you can't trick the system into letting you say you own the money and tokens actually owned by someone else. Once a block is "mined" it becomes a permanent, un-editable link in the chain of blocks (aka The Blockchain) that is at the core of a particular coin. The people that mine these blocks are rewarded with brand new, never before used coins.

That's the rub. Do you want coins? Gotta' mine blocks. Wanna mine blocks? You have to solve this ever-increasingly difficult math problem. Wanna solve this math problem? Get powerful computing power or else you won't be able to solve it before anyone else. Seeing as graphics cards are the most powerful computing devices wildly available it was not long before they were co-opted for crypto mining. This has led to global supply issues. Manufacturers want to make a powerful card for great graphics, but that means they need to make them able to crunch more numbers, making them more desirable to miners, and so on. This has been the world we have been stuck in, graphics cards being grabbed up and used for greed instead of gaming. The only ones that have been able to easily get graphics cards are people trying to make money with no regard for anything other than their potential bottom line, and that's not the worse part.

"Proof of Work" means just that, that you are doing more work on the network than anyone else and that means if you want to make money you will need to solve more and more math than everyone else. So to stay in the game you need to add another mining system... and another... and another... and before long your mining rigs are guzzling enough energy to power a third-world village. The Ethereum network alone used enough electricity to power 1,597,222 American households. But that ended today.

A few hours ago Ethereum, also known as Eth, switched from the Proof of Work system to "Proof of Stake," a completely different and vastly more responsible model. Like Proof of work, every transaction is still being recorded in blocks on the blockchain. While there is still math scrambling things up and keeping the chain secure, blocks do not need to be mined, they are signed and confirmed randomly by people that have staked a significant amount of the currency in an inaccessible state. Instead of a gold rush, we are now looking at a stock market where you gain what is kind of equivalent to random interest. The best part is that no mining means no solving math. GPUs are now useless to the system that powers every major NFT platform and that's great, no matter your opinion of monkey jpgs. Analysts at the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute (CCRI) are anticipating an energy reduction of 99.998% and likened it to the difference in size between the Eifel Tower and a Lego Minifig.

Only time will tell the social implications of this. Are Cryptos (or at least Eth) ok now? Will you finally be able to get your hands on a current gen-graphics card at a price that won't make you cry? I don't know, but I do believe that if this is a success it will trigger a wave of positive change that, while not fixing the issues of scams and art theft, will at least lead to a greener future and hopefully allow people the choice whether they want to be affected by crypto in their lives or not. The first Knives Out was amazing. I was blown away by the 2019 murder/mystery, seeing Daniel Craig shatter his James Bond typecasting to become Benoit Blanc, a modern-day Hercule Poirot style master detective with an impeccable eye and distrust for everyone connected to a crime.

Apparently, Netflix was blown away by Ryan Johnson's film as well because they spent over $450 million for the property and signed Craig and the crew up for two sequels, the first of which just debuted at the 47th annual Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews. The only downside to this is that we have 3 whole months of spoiler dodging because if you can't make your way to one of the movie's film festival showings our first taste of Glass Onion is served on December 23rd on Netflix.

Well, Apple just flipped the switch and is now pushing their latest mobile OS to users. "Big whoop Scyne," you say from your green bubbled, highly customizable powerhouse android device, "how does that affect me?" Well, frendo, Apple is debuting a few new ways of doing everyday tasks and for the first time in a long time is making mobile computing magical again. The thing is when a company comes out with a cool new feature it usually flows to the other platform. It's always been my stance that one system is not better than the other, just different, but today Apple is really trying to prove its case. Here's some of their new new:

Finally a Haptic Keyboard

For as long as the iPhone has existed, the iOS keyboard has remained an unyielding alphabet stuck to a glass screen. The late Steve Jobs famously stated that the now standard design of an all-screen device with no physical keyboard allows for infinite interface options. While that is true, we are creatures of habit and when you push a button, part of that is the tactile feedback. In my opinion, I think it's why I see more typos on iOS devices. That lack of feedback has always made the keyboard feel flat. You'd think this would have come sooner seeing as they are the company that invented the non-mechanical, all-glass trackpad for their MacBooks, but better late than never.

Lock Screen Widgets

Pretty much just straight lifting the complications that they have built for the Apple Watch, iOS 16 gives you the ability to add widgets to The lock screen. Nothing new for an Android user but the widgets are super flexible and can even blend into the image you set for your lock screen. Through the use of their focus mode feature, you can create pages of different lock screens giving you the ability to quickly change your little pocket dashboard's layout and recall it as needed.

A Way Out

While I have never personally experienced abuse in a relationship I know people that have been hurt by the ones they trusted and loved. People in such situations are a lot of times stuck, their channels of communication closely monitored and controlled by their abuser, making it feel impossible to get help. iOS 16 new "Safety Check" can be helpful to users whose personal safety is at risk from domestic or intimate partner violence by quickly removing all access they’ve granted to others. It includes an emergency reset that helps users easily sign out of iCloud on all their other devices, reset privacy permissions, and limit messaging to just the device in their hand. It also helps users understand and manage which people and apps they’ve given access to.

Apple Will Now Finance Your Toaster

When apple came out with the Apple Card everyone laughed, including me... but then I got one. There's something kind of refreshing about a credit card that tries to be as open as it can be with fees. If you are in the Apple Ecosystem your money being tied to your account is the ultimate way to keep you locked in, but it's so goddamn convenient I had to bite. Apple's going a step further now with "Apple Pay Later," which lets you spread a purchase out over the course of 4 regular installments with 0 fees and 0 interest, pretty much undercutting every "Buy-now, Pay-later" app out there. This is ecosystem lock-in at its finest but man, if you have the credit for it, Tim Cook will help you make the best hard bread money can buy.

That's only a handful of the features in the new update, not to forget that they have just announced new phones, including some that for the first time ever (even counting Android devices) have an always-on display that is actually always on and not just a few pixels. It might not be worth switching but either way you look at it, Apple finally decided to try that whole "innovation" thing again.
