Well, that happened. Nintendo just had a Nintendo Direct Press Conference to showcase the upcoming Super Mario Movie and um... wow. Mario has been changed for the first time since... well... ever... While still looking like "Mario" he sounds NOTHING like the Mario we know. There is no accent, no falsetto, he sounds like Chris Pratt. Illumination, the Comcast-owned studio behind the yellow creatures along with the Sing and Secret Life of Pets franchises, are the ones animating this feature and they have done an amazing job of kicking my preconception of their studio to the curb. Visually amazing, but god... Pratt..... WHY?
Seeing as this is just a teaser only time will tell if this first impression is going to truly tell us anything about the actual feature but the fact that Nintendo has held this back and has pushed the film's release date back multiple times has me personally questioning if this is going to be a vocal "Ugly Sonic" situation here... Thing is, while Sega is willing to bend, Nintendo has a history of making questionable changes and choices with their properties and when met with criticism doubling down.
Speculation will be interesting though seeing as Nintendo immediately started issuing takedowns of reaction streams...
